Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what seems to be blood from a person in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm law enforcement.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a individual observed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then located many other smeared cars and residential walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say early analysis show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any harm in association with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have requested to the public for information.
A high-ranking representative commented the vandalism rendered him speechless and required to be resolved quickly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine victims by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
