Early Saturday, accounts surfaced of major explosions shaking the Iranian capital, following claims from Israel that it had conducted a preemptive military action.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per eyewitness accounts, two powerful explosions were heard in Tehran on Saturday. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were seen rising over the centre and east of the Iranian capital.
“The type of explosions indicates that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially offer additional information.
Context: Escalating Strains and Recent Events
This event occurs against a background of sharply increased tensions in the Middle East. Key events leading up to this attack include:
- American Naval Deployment: A massive buildup of American warships in the region, including the movement of carrier strike groups.
- Nuclear Talks: Recent talks between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program concluded without a deal, with suggestions of further talks planned.
- Official Rhetoric: Before the strike, a prominent American figure had described Iran as “the world’s number one sponsor of terror” and delivered threats regarding its missile program.
- Diplomatic Deadline: Allegedly, a deadline of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian authorities had charged the United States of spreading “falsehoods” about its defensive capabilities. Officials rejected claims about missile development and protest deaths as baseless.
The situation is fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
