Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
